Chuck DiebertEighteen chess players competed in the 18th annual Trick or Treat Mini-Swiss chess tournament. The three-round chess tournament was held in the Benes Room of Ohio Wesleyan's Hamilton Williams Campus Center. Chuck Diebert, a Master, received $50 for his first place finish. John Hughes, a Class A player, John Stopa, a Master, and Dave Rutherford, a Class A player, split the second place money of $25.

Bishops Chess Club advisor Tom Wolber won the Reserve section of the Tryptophan Open which was held in Reynoldsburg on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The tournament, sponosred by the Fellowship of the King Chess Club, was divided into three sections by rating with 33 players. Wolber, competing against a dozen other chess players, received $100 for going undefeated in the four round Reserve section. His rating jumped from 1138 to 1287. Wolber's opponents included George Jones who has competed in the Ohio Collegiate representing The Ohio State University and Mark Borders who competed in the Trick or Treat Mini-Swiss.

U. S. SENIOR OPEN

 

Retired librarian Tom Green traveled from his new home state of Arizona to Tulsa, Oklahoma to compete in the U. S. Senior Open over the Labor Day Weekend. 54 chess players age 50 and over competed in this six round event. The top finisher, Larry Christiansen, qualified for the U. S. Closed Championship. Larry Kaufman, the top finisher aged 60 or older qualified for the World Senior Open. The U. S. Women's Open, a Master's Round Robin, and the Okie Open were held at the same site. Green finished in a tie for 7th place with a record of four wins and two losses. Two of his wins were against higher rated opponents. He gained 43 rating points and won $100 for being the top Class A player.
His fifth round win over Expert Carlos Santillan, Texas, featured his favorite opening, the King's Gambit.
