COLUMBUS OPEN

Two local players competed in the 2007 Columbus Open July 6-8. Tom Green was 2-3 with only one loss in the Premier section. Jim Dohnal tied for second place in the Reserve section. He shares his notes and analysis for two of his games.

Jim Dohnal vs. Zachary Kountz [B21]
[Deep Fritz 10 (60s)]
This is the Sicilian Grand Prix.
Here is a game between two "C" players with each making their share of mistakes. I chose it because - 1. I won. 2. It was interesting 3. I remember what I was thinking during the game. 4. Even though I had an advantage during most of the game I felt so pressured trying to stay ahead and I was frustrated with trying to find a win. 5. This was one of two teenagers that I played and they both made things easier for me toward the end by grabbing pawns and giving me an open file. It was also of interest to me because throughout the game I had a very difficult time trying to think two or three moves in advance until Black's 29th move after which I instantly saw the win including all of Black's moves and the various lines a few moves deep - I "saw" the board. What I cannot figure out is why I could suddenly and effortlessly "see" the board when for the previous twenty some moves I struggled to see two or three moves and never was able to 'see" the board. Perhaps it is because earlier there were too many options - I would start thinking down one line for two moves and my mind would just "jump" to another line (or worse yet jump away from chess). It is very frustrating when your mind just jumps around and never really gets to do a decent analysis of any one line.
The analysis embedded in the game moves is from Fritz. Here are some of my "C" player thoughts that I had during the game.
5. a3 was to give some place for my Bishop. Since, according to Fritz, it was the first deviation from "book" move there must be better moves.
Obviously 7. Ng4 and 11. h6 are bad for Black.
12. e6 is good for the obvious reason, Black is very cramped for the rest of the game. I do not know why I did not play it at move 11. It was part of my plan a move or two earlier but for some reason I castled instead.
After 11. 0-0 I did not want to move my king to h1 until I was forced to by the discovered check. As long as the discovered check was not a threat I did not want to move the king because I would use a tempo without Black's using a tempo. I was tempted though.
I never saw 16. Nb3 coming. But even before I saw 17. Be3 I was not worried about losing the exchange. Black has been playing in a cramped position with a queen and two nights against my queen, bishop, knight and rook. If black wants to exchange his somewhat active knight for my inactive rook it was OK with me. I do not know if this would have been good but this is what I thought.
18 Maybe dc was better than Bxc4. This would have given me an open d file. But I did not want to block my bishop.
21. Bb5 was bad. 21 . Nxf8+ is the move but I was looking at moving the queen to e8 and got caught looking for things that were not there.
I never saw Qh4 at either moves 23 and 25.
I did not see 24. Nxe6 as "Registering a claim to victory" as Fritz did. I was worried about freeing Black's bishop but found it preferable to the rook getting to f8 with tempo.
31. Rfe1 was an obvious blunder on my part because Fritz shows that if I had played Rxb7 I had a forced mate in fifteen. Fritz - GET A LIFE! (Oh, I forgot, he can't get a life)

And now for the game and Fritz's comments:

In this game I offered a draw, which was accepted, when I had an easy win. I looked at it today and the win is so simple and obvious. I remember that I was very tired and just wanted to finish the game so without thinking I just offered the draw. So goes chess life in the geriatric group. And earlier I was talking about teenagers having weak endgame skills!
